House History

Bessie (Uhl) Nuckolls (1886-1963) was the housemother at Birch and Barton halls from 1927 to 1943 and taught mathematics at Grinnell High School from 1944 to 1951. She returned to Iowa State and was the housemother at the Adelante Fraternity House from 1951 to 1963. One of her brothers, Edwin “Dutch” Uhl, was a well known football player when at Iowa State.

More Details Nuckolls House has a large den on the north end of the floor that has tables and chairs for studying, playing a game of cards or a quiet place to stretch out and relax. There are two bathrooms on the floor. A water bottle refill station promotes the Department of Residence’s green initiatives.
