House History
Named for Raymond Hughes (1873-1958). The 8th President of Iowa State and served from 1927 to 1936. After his retirement he returned to Iowa State as President Emeritus and devoted his time to research and writing. Accomplishments during his administration included marked furtherance of the internal organization of the university, liberalization of the technical curriculum, improvement of the cultural tones, development of converted campaign to improve teaching, development of unified research program, introduction of the advisory system later to become the Student Counseling Service, opening of the Memorial Union, establishment of the placement service, introduction of the Ward System and adoption of the mandatory “step down at sixty-five rule.”
