New this year, ISU Department of Residence is managing your gas service with Alliant Energy. Your service is already connected so you should not set up your own service with Alliant. A monthly bill that reflects the previous month’s usage will be added to your U-Bill. Only contact Alliant Energy in the case of an emergency — if you smell gas call 800-255-4268 immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How do I pay my Alliant Energy bill?
  • What utilities do I need to set up?
    • None – everything is set up for you. If you wish to add a cable package at an additional expense, contact MetroNet. For more information call (515) 815-6386.
  • Do I need to set up gas utility in my unit?
    • No, the Department of Residence manages the Alliant Energy account for your unit. A bill will be added to you U-Bill the following month with the services that you used.
  • How is my bill split between roommates?
    • Your services are split between all of the people who are contracted to live in your unit and divided evenly.
      • Example: Shared occupancy apartments with two contracted residents are split equally (50/50) between roommates each month.
      • Example: Apartments with one contracted resident, (family apartments, private pet apartments, and shared apartments where there is only one resident) will be assigned the full bill.
  • I’m having a problem with my bill. Who should I contact?
    • If you don’t think your bill is correct or are seeing another issue, please contact our Contracts and Assignments Office in the Department of Residence at housing@iastate.edu or 515-294-2900.
  • When should I contact Alliant?
    • You should only contact Alliant Energy if you smell gas or have a problem with a bill for services prior to Aug. 1, 2022.
  • I have budget billing set up with Alliant Energy. Can I continue that arrangement?
    • Unfortunately, budget billing will not be an option after August 1.
    • If you are currently on the budget billing program, Alliant will calculate any amounts owed to them as the provider or to you as the customer to balance your account to $0.00 as of July 31. This should be reflected on your final bill. Questions regarding that July bill should be directed to Alliant Energy.
    • For planning purposes, the SUV units are heated using natural gas, so the bills during the late fall, winter, and early spring months will be higher.
  • I have a credit balance on my Alliant account. What will happen to that credit on August 1?
    • Alliant will issue a check to you for the amount of the credit balance, minus any final charges for July service or budget billing adjustments. The details should be reflected on your final statement.
  • Can I request an exemption from my utilities transferring to ISU?
    • At this time, we are not granting exceptions to this process change. While we understand that there are individuals who have concerns about this process change for various reasons, the Department of Residence believes this is the best solution for the SUV neighborhood as a whole.
  • I receive utility assistance from an external organization. How will this be handled?
    • Please contact our Contracts and Assignments Office in the Department of Residence at your earliest convenience so that we can review and document the details of your situation and work on a solution that meets your needs.
    • Email housing@iastate.edu or call 515-294-2900
