Residence Hall Move Out Procedures

Any time you move out of your room you must follow proper check-out procedures. Not doing so can create financial and security issues for you and other students. As such, we take these procedures very seriously.

If you do not follow all check-out procedures or you do not check out by the assigned deadline you will be charged a $50 improper check-out fee. You may also face lock change charges and, depending upon the time of year, you may also continue to accrue daily room and board charges until you have officially checked out.

Check-Out Procedures

To properly check out you must:

  1. Schedule an inspection appointment
    1. At least 24 hours before you plan to leave, contact your CA and schedule a move-out appointment.
  2. Pack
    1. Pack all of your belongings and remove them from your room. Your CA can't inspect your room until it is empty.
    2. Empty all of the drawers in your desk and dresser/wardrobe.
    3. Remove all posters, pictures and/or other decorations from walls and doors.
    4. Personal property left in the room will be removed from the premises.
      • It will be kept for 30 days, after which it will be sent to Asset Recovery for sale/disposal.
      • You will be charged for removal, storage and disposal, with a minimum charge of $50.
  3. Clean your room
    1. Cleaning supplies are available at the hall desk if you don't have your own.
    2. Sweep and wash uncarpeted floors. DO NOT sweep debris into the hallway.
    3. Vacuum carpeted floors.
    4. Wipe down walls.
    5. Wash out dresser and desk drawers.
    6. Dust / wash all furniture surfaces and window sills.
    7. In suites, clean and disinfect all bathroom surfaces including showers/tubs, sinks, counters and toilets.
  4. Take your trash OUTSIDE to the dumpsters.
  5. Account for all furniture
    1. All furniture that was in the room at check-in should be present and fully and correctly assembled.
    2. You will be charged for missing or unassembled furniture
  6. Attend your check-out inspection appointment
    1. At the pre-scheduled time, your CA will come to your room to conduct a check-out inspection.
      1. Please Note: Your CA may be delayed if appointments with other students did not go as planned. Please be patient.
        • If your CA isn't available, any other CA, Hall Desk staff, or Hall Director in your building can check you out.
        • If your CA is not available and the hall desk is closed, call the CA on duty for assistance.
    2. The CA will:
      1. Inspect your room for damages and cleanliness
        • You will be charged for any damages and for cleaning necessary to return the room to the condition it was in at check in.
      2. Record the condition of your room on your Residence Hall Room Inventory and Condition Report
      3. Collect your keys and lock your room.
        • All keys issued to you must be returned at the time of check-out. Failure to do so will result in charges for lock change and replacement keys.
    3. You will:
      1. Provide a forwarding address
      2. Sign and date the Residence Hall Room Inventory and Condition Report
      3. Keep your university ID card and/or access card.
