House History

Gilmour MacDonald joined the Iowa State staff in 1910 as assistant professor of forestry. When forestry was separated from the department of horticulture in 1946 he became its first head. He had an intense interest in forestry and conservation and received a Distinguished Service Award from the Society of the American Forest Association in 1955, who described him as “one of the most beloved teachers of forestry in the United States.”
