House History
Named for Lauro Cavazos. Cavazos earned a Ph.D. in physiology from Iowa State in 1954. As a democrat Cavazos served as Secretary of Education during the Reagan and George H. W. Bush Republican administrations. He was named President of Texas Tech in 1980 – a position he held for eight years – where he was both the first alumnus and the first Hispanic to serve as Texas Tech president.
