The Campus Life unit recently shared a message of support and resources with students in the wake of many events over the past few weeks that may be impacting them. A copy of the message is below.

Additionally, students living on campus will have spaces available in their communities to come together and talk about recent events, giving them the opportunity to be supported by staff and show support for their fellow community members.

Resources for Students

Students who may be struggling with recent events – or anything else as the semester comes to a close – can connect with Student Counseling Services, staff in Housing, Dining or the Memorial Union, and can also find a list of resources on campus here. The Campus Life team and greater Iowa State community is here for you!

Message shared on April 16, 2021

Greetings Students:

Over the past couple of weeks, our country has experienced continuous acts of injustice and discrimination and we know this has had an impact on you and your experiences. We also know that this ongoing history of structural, systemic, and systematic racism and discrimination because of someone’s identity is a fundamental and deeply distressing injustice.

Commitment to Continuing to Build an Inclusive Community

The Campus Life cluster (Memorial UnionISU Dining, and the Department of Residence) is passionately committed to continuing the work of addressing all issues of bias, discrimination, racism, and all acts that are against creating an inclusive environment where all individuals feel heard, valued, understood, appreciated, and respected. We are committed to having a community that is safe, supportive, and inclusive. We are committed to having a space that is equitable and kind; where people do not have to fear for their lives because of the color of their skin and their identities; and where everyone has the same opportunities to grow, thrive, live, and enjoy their lives.

Resources

You can also engage with resources on campus, such as Student Counseling Services, for additional support. If you live on campus, your Hall Director/Apartment Community Manager and other Residence Life staff are also here for support.

We are here for all students and are in solidarity with you.

Staff Support & resources

The Campus Life Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office is also here to support all staff working in the three units of Housing, Dining and the Memorial Union. A processing space was offered on Friday, April 16, for staff. Additionally, staff are always welcome to reach out to the Campus Life Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and can also find resources with Iowa State’s Employee Assistance Program.

This statement of support was shared with all Campus Life staff as well.
