Residential Computing and Telephone Service
Ethernet Service
The Iowa State University data network provides high-speed, reliable connectivity throughout campus. Each student who lives on-campus can access the campus network and the Internet via the service that is provided to them as part of their room / apartment rate.
- All residence hall rooms are wired with at least one Ethernet data jack in each room.
- In Frederiksen Court apartments there is at least one Ethernet data jack in each bedroom and one Ethernet data jack in the living room
- DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service is available in SUV apartments.
- All residents are responsible for providing their own connection cables. Additionally, residents in double or triple rooms may need a splitter or hub. Because of the vast variation in rooms, we suggest you wait until you check in to purchase these items.
The Student Network Access Program (SNAP) is available to help residents connect their computers to the campus network. A SNAP team member can install Ethernet cards, configure the card for an on-campus Ethernet or DSL connection, and help load networking software. For more information about SNAP, or for instructions on how to configure your computer yourself, please visit the Information Technology Services web site.
Wireless Service
Beginning spring 2009, the DOR began a project to bring wireless internet access to all residence halls. This project will be done in phases and will take two years to complete. Wireless service in the residence halls should be available according to the following schedule:
|
Spring 2009 |
Eaton, Martin and Buchanan |
|
Summer 2009 |
Maple, Willow, Larch and Helser |
|
Fall 2009 |
Wallace and Wilson |
|
Winter 2010 |
Barton, Lyon, Freeman, Oak and Elm |
|
Summer 2010 |
Birch, Welch, Roberts, Friley and Linden |
Please check back here periodically for schedule updates. For more information about the wireless service that will be provided, please review our Wireless FAQ.
Wireless service is not intended to replace Ethernet service. All the currently available Ethernet jacks will remain in place and activated. However, to off-set the costs associated with this new service, once Wireless service is active in a building, the landline telephone service in that room will be turned off. Residents will still be able to contract for landline telephone service through Information Technology Services. For more information, please review the Telephone Service section of this page.
