Last year, a group of students began meeting with Department of Residence (DoR) staff to talk about recycling. This student group came to be known as the GreenHouse Group. The GreenHouse Group has successfully outlined a department-wide recycling program. The DoR will be supporting the program and working with students to help us all live more sustainable lives.
This fall, our students will be able to recycle paper, redeemable plastic, non-redeemable plastic and wet board (cereal boxes, snack boxes, etc.) right on their floor! In the apartment communities, recycling takes place in the community centers.
You just unpacked and set up a new futon in your student’s room...now what to do with the big cardboard box it came in?
The DoR will be providing cardboard recycling locations during move in. Watch for more information when you arrive on campus!
DoR Green Team
As part of Iowa State University’s Live Green initiative, the Department of Residence has a dedicated group of staff members known as the Green Team. They’re working on things such as replacing lighting, using green cleaning products, constructing and renovating in a sustainable manner, replacing windows and much more. Watch for more green updates throughout the year.
ISU Dining’s food waste and other compostable materials will be sent to Iowa State’s all-university composting facility. This facility composts organic wastes from various campus sources. The material is then used around campus for livestock bedding, to replenish soil, for flower beds and more. ISU Dining will send waste from Seasons Marketplace, Union Drive Marketplace, the Knapp-Storms Commissary Kitchen and the Memorial Union to ISU’s composting facility.
