Glossary
If
you’re new to on-campus housing, some of the vocabulary we use on our web site and in AccessPlus
may be a little confusing. To clear things up, here is a list of the words, phrases and abbreviations
people most commonly call us about.
- Application Only – Indicates the presence of a Residential Learning Community for which residents must meet specific eligibility criteria. For a complete list of Residential Learning Communities and locations visit http://housing.iastate.edu/places/rlc-th.php.

Bed Type – Indicates what type of bed is in the room. Options include captain,
lofted and unlofted. All bed sizes are extra-long twin, except in Larch and Willow halls where
each room has one standard twin bed and one extra-long twin bed.
- Captain – he beds in these spaces are platform beds with drawers built in underneath. It is not possible to loft these beds.
- Lofted – Lofts, which raise the bed up, are provided for the beds in these spaces. Residents may not bring their own loft. For more information visit http://housing.iastate.edu/services/loft.html.
- Unlofted – Lofts are not provided for the beds in these spaces. Residents may supply their own lofts. For more information visit http://housing.iastate.edu/services/loft.html.
- Cap. – Capacity
- Coed – Both males and females live in the same building or house in different sections.
- Corner Suite – In Martin Hall only, these suites have a larger common room than a typical suite
- Double – Traditional style room designed for and occupied by two students and containing two sets of furniture.
- Double Suite – A suite designed for and occupied by two students and containing two sets of furniture.
- Female – Building / House is all female.
- Flooring – Indicates what type of floor covering is standard in the room. Options include carpet, tile and wood.
- Graduate or over 21 – Residents of this type of floor must be as registered as students or be 21 years of age or older.
- House – A grouping of 40 - 60 residents who live on the same floor or section of a residence hall.
- Housemates – A group of residents who live on the same house.
- Lofted Suite – Martin Hall only- a two story suite that consists two – three double rooms, a common room and one - two bathrooms.
- Male – Building / House is all male.
- Maple Suite – A three person suite in Maple Hall that includes a single room, a double room and a bathroom.
- No Pet – Pets (other than fish) are not permitted in this unit.
- No Smoking – Smoking is not permitted in this unit. Smoking is prohibited in all residence halls and in all of Frederiksen Court.
- Open Breaks – Indicates that the building/area remains open during Winter Break (the break between the fall and spring semesters). Generally, only Buchanan Hall, Linden Hall, Wallace Hall, Wilson Hall, Frederiksen Court and Schilletter/University Villages are open during Winter Break. All on-campus housing options remain open during Thanksgiving and Spring breaks.
- Pet OK – Designated units in University Village that allow pets other than fish.
- Rate – How much an on-campus space costs. Rates vary by room/ apartment type. Rates indicated are for the entire academic year (fall and spring).
- S/F or Substance Free – Alcohol is prohibited to all students in this area, regardless of age.
- Single – Traditional style room designed for and occupied by one student and containing one set of furniture.
- Single Gender – All residents of these buildings are of the same gender. Oak-Elm is all female; Birch-Welch-Roberts is all male.
- Single Suite – A suite designed for and occupied by one student and contains one set of furniture.
- Smoking – Designated units in Schilletter/University Village that allow smoking. By Iowa law all other rooms and apartments on the ISU campus are non-smoking.
- Suite – A grouping of one-three residence hall rooms (of the same gender) that share a private bathroom.
- Super Single – Traditional style room designed for two students that is occupied by only one student. With the exception of Wallace Hall, all super singles contain two sets of furniture.
- Traditional Style – A standard residence hall room with one - three occupants. Bathrooms are on the hallway and shared by all students (of the same gender) living in that house.
- Triple – Traditional style room designed for and occupied by three students and containing three sets of furniture.
